Mingesting your own dog food can be time consuming. There is prep work, like chopping vegetables, and some recipes take over an hour to cook. You cannot serve it to your dog when it is very hot, so you also have to wait for it to cool down. Have you considered using a slow cooker to make cooking homemade dog food easier?
It will take longer to cook food, but with a slow cooker you can ‘set it and forget it’. What I mean by that is all you have to do is add the ingredients to the slow cooker, set the timer, and get on with your day. When you get home you will have some homemade dog food ready to serve.
Slow Cooker Dog Food Recipes are ideal for busy pet owners who want to feed their dogs a healthier diet.
You will still need to do the prep work, but you won’t need to spend the time cooking your pet’s dinner. I can cook the food for this beef and rice slow cooker in about 20 minutes.

Beef and Rice Slow Cooker Dog Food Recipe
- 4 cups of water
- 2 1/2 pounds of ground beef
- 1 1/2 cups brown rice
- 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans – drained
- 1 1/2 cups squash – chopped (I used zucchini, but any type of squash will work)
- 1 1/2 cups chopped carrots
- 1/2 cup frozen peas
As I mentioned, aside from the prep work to chop the veggies, this is an extremely easy recipe to make.
First, add the 4 cups of water to the slow cooker. Then add all the other ingredients. As I demonstrate in my video, I like to distribute the ingredients instead of just throwing them all in a pile.
It is much easier to mix everything together when you are done adding the ingredients.
When all the ingredients are added, mix them together until everything is evenly distributed. Place the lid on your slow cooker and turn it to the “low” setting.
In my video I mention that you should cook this homemade dog food recipe over low heat for about 5 hours. Some slow cookers have a built-in timer that automatically turns the slow cooker off after the designated time.
If your slow cooker doesn’t have a timer, don’t worry. Do your best to cook it for 5 hours, but if the food cooks longer, that’s okay. The beauty of slow cookers is that food won’t burn if it cooks for an extra hour. It will just be a little more mushy, but it won’t bother your dog.
Once the homemade dog food has cooled to room temperature, you can give it to your dog. You can store supplemental dog food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. You can also freeze it for use at a later date if you want.
