SASKATOON -> THE BASICS
This year’s Saskatoon Ex will take place August 6-8 and 11-15 at Prairieland Park. All admission entrances open at noon and preferred parking lots open at 10:30 am Outdoor entertainment areas, food concessions and mid-roads close at midnight.
The Ex will feature new rides, including a roller coaster called Crazy Mouse. You and a few others will crash into a small car and drive along a bright red and yellow drive with tight turns and steep drops.
JUST “TRY” TO RESIST THE MUSIC
Blue Rodeo will be among the groups performing in the grandstand. Other acts include Our Lady Peace and Tom Cochrane, while Bif Naked and Platinum Blonde are among the performers on the Dakota Dunes Casino Show.
A spudnut is no ordinary donut. No, a spudnut carries decades of tradition on its noble, icy shoulders. The recipe includes a specially spiced potato flour made by Bakemark which is patented in Prairieland and which is only used in the making of the spudnuts of Ex.
Each year, the Spudnut Supervisor oversees the production of 6,500-11,000 spudnuts by 65 employees. (Editor’s note: It’s surprisingly difficult to find reliable estimates of the calorie content of spudnuts. But using an approximate number of 100 calories, that adds up to 1.1 million calories consumed by customers each day. We thought that would be a fun detail.)
The Doukhobor Society of Saskatoon uses the proceeds from the sale of bread at Saskatoon EX to fund its other activities. They also see it as a way of perpetuating an important cultural tradition.
The recipe dates back over 200 years to the Russian Empire. Each batch of dough uses 132 pounds of flour, resulting in 100 loaves. Once the ovens are heated, the ashes are removed and 33 oven leavened breads are slid inside and left to bake for an hour. Operating in two shifts, the stand produces an average of around 700 loaves of bread per day.
Since 1972, Doukhobor Bread can be bought by the slice with butter and jam, or by the loaf.
BRING AN UMBRELLA
This year’s Ex is an entirely open-air event, with no lounge or access to the main buildings. Guests are encouraged to wear masks and improved cleaning protocols will be in place.
